ABB IEC 61850 overview

The international IEC 61850 standard defines a framework for substation

communications networks and systems. The standard consists of several parts

ranging from the requirements on substation automation systems to the details of a

communication protocol.

One major difference between the other communication protocols applied in

substation automation and IEC 61850 is that the latter is not only a communication

protocol, but a whole framework for specifying, engineering and operating

substation automation systems. The communication part covers the connection

between the IEDs and the substation clients, for example, SCADA and gateways.

The IEC 61850 standard specifies an expandable data model and services for

substation automation (standard parts 7-x). The standard does not specify any

protection or control functions, but specifies how the functions expose their

information to a communication network.

Bus protection via GOOSE

The IEC 61850 implementation in REF615 also in

cludes fast peer-to-peer communication, over the

substation bus. Use GOOSE communication be

tween REF615 IEDs of the incoming and outgoing

feeders of a substation cooperate to form a stable,

reliable, and high-speed busbar protection system.

The cost-effective GOOSE-based busbar protec

tion is obtained by configuring the IEDs and the

operational availability of the protection is assured

by continuous supervision of the protection IEDs

and their GOOSE messaging over the station bus.

No separate hard-wiring is needed for the horizon

tal communication between the switchgear cubicles.

Pre-emptive condition monitoring

For continuous knowledge of the operational avail

ability of the REF615 features, a comprehensive set

of monitoring functions to supervise the relay

health, the trip circuit, and the circuit breaker

health is included. The breaker monitoring can in

clude checking the wear and tear of the circuit

breaker, the spring charging time of the breaker

operating mechanism and the gas pressure of the

breaker chambers. The relay also monitors the

breaker travel time and the number of circuit

breaker operations to provide basic information

for scheduling breaker maintenance.

Standardized communication

REF615 supports the new IEC 61850 standard for in

ter-device communication in substations. The relay

also supports the industry standard DNP3.0 and Mod

bus® protocols. The implementation of the IEC 61850

substation communication standard in REF615 en

compasses both vertical and horizontal communica

tion, including GOOSE messaging and parameter set

ting according to IEC 61850-8-1. The substation

configuration language enables the use of engi

neering tools for automated configuration, com

missioning, and maintenance of substation devices.

The REF615R is a dedicated feeder IED perfectly aligned

for the protection, control, measurement, and supervi

sion of utility substations and industrial power systems.

ABB REF615R Feeder protection and control Application

Application

The REF615R provides main protection for overhead lines,

cable feeders, and busbar systems of distribution substations.

It can be applied for protection and control of grounded and

ungrounded distribution systems.

One configuration tailored to meet and exceed these DPU2000R

ANSI and IEC configurations:

− Standard:  587R… (ANSI); 687R…(IEC)

− Synch Check:  587C…(ANSI); 687C…(IEC)

− SEF:  587E…(ANSI); 687E…(IEC)

The REF615R is designed for users looking for a 19” rack

mount form of ABB’s Relion® REF615. The REF615R utilizes

the same form and fit as the DPU2000R relay and provides

exact wire-alike matching rear terminals. This wire-alike

feature makes the REF615R the ideal solution for upgrad

ing to the industry’s latest technologies. The REF615R is

a member of ABB’s Relion family and part of its 615 pro

tection and control product series. The 615 series IEDs

are characterized by their compact, withdrawable design.

Engineered from the ground up, the 615 series has been

designed to unleash the full potential of the IEC 61850

standard for communication and interoperability of substa

tion automation devices while providing Modbus® and DNP

simultaneously in one standard configuration.

ABB S800 I/O System for Compact Product Suite Outline of all modules

S800 I/O is a comprehensive, distributed and modular process I/O system

that communicates with parent controllers over industry-standard field buses.

Thanks to its broad connectivity it fits a wide range

of process controllers from ABB and other vendors.

By permitting installation in the field, close to sensors and

actuators, S800 I/O reduces the installation cost by reducing

the cost of cabling. And thanks to features such as “hot swap”

of modules, “on-line” reconfiguration and redundancy options,

it contributes to keeping production – and thereby profits – up.

ABB TU842 System 800xA hardware selector Features

Features and benefits

• Complete instalation of I/O modules using 3-wire connections and field power distribution.

• Up to 16 channels of field signals and process power connections.

• Connections to two ModuleBuses and I/O modules.

• Mechanical keying prevents insertion of the wrong I/O module.

• Latching device to DIN rail for grounding.

• DIN rail mounting

The TU842 MTU can have up to 16 I/O channels and 2+2 process

voltage connections. Each channel has two I/O connections and one

ZP connection. The maximum rated voltage is 50 V and maximum

rated current is 3 A per channel.

The MTU distributes the two ModuleBuses to each I/O module and to

the next MTU. It also generates the correct address to the I/O

modules by shifting the outgoing position signals to the next MTU.

The MTU can be mounted on a standard DIN rail. It has a mechanical

latch that locks the MTU to the DIN rail.

Four mechanical keys, two for each I/O module, are used to configure

the MTU for different types of I/O modules. This is only a mechanical

configuration and it does not affect the functionality of the MTU or

the I/O module. Each key has six positions, which gives a total

number of 36 different configurations.
