Vibro-Meter VM600 MPC4 Mechanical Protection Card Isolation

Isolation of MPS and CMS

The VM600 rack, Mechanical Protection Card, Condition Monitoring Card and associated software

have been designed to comply with the API670 standard for the isolation of the Mechanical Protection

System (MPS)

and Condition Monitoring System (CMS) to ensure that the functionality of the MPS is not dependent on,

or in any way affected by, the operation of the CMS.

Therefore, whilst Mechanical Protection and Condition Monitoring cards can easily share sensor

signals from the measurement chain, in a VM600 rack, the MPC4/IOC4T card pair

does not share any communication buses with the XMx16/XIO16T Condition Monitoring card pair

and the MPC4/IOC4T card pair is configured and operated using the VM600 MPSx

software (whereas the XMx16/XIO16T card pair is configured and operated using the VM600 MPSx

software (whereas the XMx16/XIO16T card pair is configured and operated using the VM600 MPSx software).

XIO16T card pair is configured and operated using VibroSight® software).

Application Information

The MPC4. when used in pairs with the IOC4T I/O cards, is ideally suited for machinery

monitoring and protection in a variety of industrial applications.

card pairs and the RLC16 relay card. It has a VME-compatible slave interface so that it

can be configured via software via VME when VME is available.

It is software configurable via VME when acting as a rack controller in a VM600 rack.

It is also software configurable via RS-232 (on the front panel of the card).

The ‘Secure’ (SIL) MPC4 card (MPC4SIL) has been developed to provide a wider range of installation

options.

Specifically, the VM600 rack also contains condition monitoring cards (e.g. XMx16) and relay cards (e.g.

IRC4).

In order to certify the security of these configurations, it is necessary to ensure that the MPC4SIL

is isolated from the other cards in the VM600 chassis so that its configuration is not inadvertently

modified.

Vibro-Meter Different versions of the MPC4 card

Different versions of the MPC4 card

There are different versions of the MPC4 card, including “Standard”, “Circuit Independent” and “Secure”

(SIL) versions.

In addition, some versions have a conformal coating applied to the card’s circuitry to provide additional

environmental protection against chemicals, dust, moisture and temperature extremes.

Both the “Standard” version and the “Safety” (SIL) version of the MPC4 card are certified to

IEC 61508 and ISO 13849 for use in functional safety environments such as SIL 1 according to IEC 61508

and ISO 13849-1 for PL c.

The “standard” MPC4 card is the original version and supports all functions and processing modes.

The “standard” MPC4 is suitable for safety systems using the VM600 rack.

Vibro-Meter VM600 MPC4 Different versions of the MPC4 card

Description

Processed dynamic (vibration) and velocity signals are available as analog outputs at the rear of the rack

(on the front panel of the IOC4T).

Voltage signals (0 to 10 V) and current signals (4 to 20 mA) are available.

The MPC4 performs self-tests and diagnostic procedures at power-up.

In addition, the card’s built-in “OK system” continuously monitors the signal level provided

by the measurement chain (sensors and/or signal conditioners) and indicates any problems

caused by broken transmission lines, faulty sensors or signal conditioners.

An LED on the front panel of the MPC4 indicates whether a processing or hardware error has occurred.

A further six LEDs, one for each input channel, indicate whether the OK system has detected

a fault and whether an alarm has occurred on the channel.

There are three versions of the MPC4 card: the “standard” version, the “circuit independent” version,

and the “safe” (SIL) version, all of which use the appropriate IOC4T input /output cards as card pairs.

Vibro-Meter VM600 MPC4 Mechanical Protection Card

Description

MPC4 Card

The MPC4 Machine Protection Card is the centerpiece of the VM600 series of Machine

Protection Systems (MPS) from Meggitt’s Vibrometer® product line.

The card is extremely versatile, capable of measuring and monitoring up to four dynamic

signal inputs and two velocity inputs simultaneously.

The dynamic signal inputs are fully programmable and can accept the following signals

acceleration, velocity and displacement (proximity) signals.

On-board multi-channel processing allows measurement of a wide range of physical

parameters including relative and absolute vibration, Smax, eccentricity, thrust position,

absolute and differential case expansion, displacement and dynamic pressure.

Digital processing includes digital filtering, integration or differentiation (if required),

rectification (RMS, average, true peak, or true peak-to-peak), order tracking (amplitude and phase),

and measurement of transducer-to-target clearance.

The speed (tachometer) input accepts signals from a variety of speed sensors,

including systems based on proximity probes, magnetic pulse pickup sensors, or TTL signals.

Fractional tachometer ratios are also supported.

Configurations can be expressed in metric or imperial units.

Alarm and hazard setpoints are fully programmable Alarm time delay, hysteresis and latching,

hysteresis and latching. Alarm and hazard levels can also be adjusted based on speed or any external

information.

The alarm and hazard levels can also be adjusted based on speed or any external information.

Each alarm level has an internal digital output (on the appropriate IOC4T I/O card).

These alarm signals can drive the four local relays on the IOC4T card,

and/or relays on optional relay cards such as the RLC16 or IRC4 via the VM600 rack’s raw bus or open

collector (OC) bus.

Vibro-Meter VM600 AMC8 and IOC8T Analog Monitor Card Pairs Description

Description

AMC8 Card

The AMC8 is an analog monitoring card designed for use in the VM600 rack-mounted system

in the Meggitt Vibrometer® product family for machinery monitoring and protection applications.

This versatile card is capable of measuring and monitoring up to eight analog signal inputs simultaneously.

The AMC8 card is available in two versions: a “standard” version and a “circuit independent” version,

both of which are available as card pairs using the corresponding IOC8T input/output card.

The AMC8 card is mounted on the front of the VM600 rack (ABE04x or ABE056) and the IOC8T I/O card is mounted on the rear.

Both cards connect directly to the rack backplane via two connectors.

A pair of AMC8/IOC8T cards provides eight channels of temperature monitoring that accept resistance

temperature detector (RTD) and thermocouple (TC) temperature inputs as well as process inputs.

The source and type of each channel is selectable during card configuration.

Cold Junction Compensation (CJC) sensor processing is used for the thermocouple temperature

channel and can be used for two of the eight channels, also selectable during card configuration.

All inputs are conditioned and compared to user-configurable alarms that are defined through Meggitt’s VM600 MPSx software.

A pair of AMC8/IOC8T cards is configured (i.e. operated independently) via the RS-232 port on the front panel of the relevant AMC8 card.

The AMC8 card also provides access to the CPUx card (ABE04x only) in slot 0 of the VM600 rack via the VME bus.

These interfaces allow the operator to configure the VM600 card, access measurements,

view detailed board status, upload firmware updates, and more.

The AMC8 card can drive the four local relays on the IOC8T card, as well as any of the 16 relays

on the RLC16 card using the VM600 rack’s raw bus and/or open collector (OC) bus.

These cards also provide analog signal outputs based on current (0 to 25 mA). Voltage outputs are also supported.

Application Information

The AMC8/IOC8T card pair is ideally suited for machinery monitoring and protection in a variety of industrial applications.
