Meggitt VMS 830-2 vibration monitor

Accordingly, the VMS 830-2 vibration monitor is

recommended for the monitoring and protection

of stand-alone machines and auxiliary balance of

plant (BOP) equipment such as fans, pumps,

centrifuges, mills and gears. Among other things it

allows observation according to ISO 10816

(DIN 45665).

For evaluating the machine state, the VMS 830-2

vibration monitor provides velocity measurements

after machine-specific filtering and/or

displacement measurements (after additional

simple integration). Analog DC output signals

(current and voltage) corresponding to the

measured vibration are also provided.

Independently adjustable alarm level limits with

selectable response delay allow the

communication of Alert and Danger alarms via

appropriate assigned relays with dry contacts

(fail-safe-function).

DESCRIPTION

Introduction

The VibroSmart® distributed monitoring system

(DMS) is a system of modular and scalable

products designed for condition monitoring and

machinery protection applications for power

generation turbines, oil and gas applications and

auxiliary balance-of-plant equipment.

VibroSmart® modules can be mounted directly

on machinery, eliminating the need for costly

cabling, because it is designed and certified to

work in extremes, such as harsh industrial

environments characterized by potentially

explosive atmospheres (Ex Zone 2), high

temperatures (70°C, 158°F) and high mechanical

stress. VibroSmart® complements the

VM600Mk2/VM600 series of rack-based solutions

from Meggitt’s vibro-meter® product line and is

compatible with the same VibroSight® machinery

monitoring system software.

The VibroSmart® VSA00x BNC cable assemblies

and BNC patch panels are accessories designed

for operation with VibroSmart VSV30x + VSB300

monitoring modules. The VSA003 is a BNC cable

assembly while the VSA004 is a BNC patch panel.

More specifically, VSA003 BNC cable assemblies

and VSA004 BNC patch panels make the

buffered sensor “raw” outputs from

VSV30x + VSB300 monitoring modules available

via BNC connectors in a rack, panel or other

enclosure in order to allow test and measurement

equipment to be more easily connected to these

VibroSmart module signals.

Meggitt vibro-meter VMS830-2 vibration monitor

During operation, the velocity sensor signal

(23 mV/mm/s) is converted by a preamplifier into

a standardized voltage signal (70.7 mV/mm/s). It

then passes through high-pass and low-pass filters

before being amplified by a two-step wide-band

amplifier to the level essential to the electronic

circuitry. It is user-configurable DIP switches that

determine which of the two possible

measurements/units – velocity or displacement –

is used for the vibration monitoring.

The DC-output signal (current loop output) is

available after true RMS rectification (RMS units).

The DC-output signal also acts with two

adjustable alarm level limit level detectors. The

response delay of the alarms/relays is set by DIL

switches to 1, 3, 5 or 10 seconds. The relays’

change-over contacts enable the Alert and

Danger circuits to operate as ether normally

energized (NE) or normally de-energized (NDE),

again, as set by DIL switches.

Accordingly, the VMS 830-2 vibration monitor is

recommended for the monitoring and protection

of stand-alone machines and auxiliary balance of

plant (BOP) equipment such as fans, pumps,

centrifuges, mills and gears. Among other things it

allows observation according to ISO 10816

(DIN 45665).

Meggitt The VMS 830-2 vibration monitor

DESCRIPTION

The VMS 830-2 vibration monitor from Meggitt’s

vibro-meter® product line is a dedicated vibration

monitor for use in vibration measurement chains.

The VMS 830-2 is a two-channel vibration monitor

that measures vibration displacement (PEAK)

and/or vibration velocity (RMS), using industrystandard velocity sensors.

Each VMS 830-2 measurement channel is

independently configurable to measure

displacement or velocity. Each channel provides

one 0 or 4 to 20 mA current loop output and a

buffered “Raw” voltage output signal. Further, for

each measurement, two alarms (Alert andDanger) and three relays (OK, Alert and Danger)

are supported. The alarms/relays are easily userconfigurable using potentiometers and DIP

switches. The VMS 830-2 also features LCD displays

to show measurement values.

Meggitt VibroSmart® VSB300 monitoring module

VSV301 monitoring module

The VSV301 monitoring module performs the data

acquisition and all of the signal processing

(filtering, analog-to-digital conversion, time and

frequency domain processing, and resampling)

required to produce processed outputs and

extracted data for physical output and data

presentation in VibroSight and VibroSight Scope.

This includes spectral band extractions,

advanced FFT analysis, trending and limit checks

(alarm and sensor OK), and run-up / run-down acquisition.

In addition, the VSV301 module has four basic

and two advanced logic functions that can be

used to combine local alarm and status

information in order to drive the module’s relays.

This local information and the logic function

outputs can also be used as inputs to the basic

logic functions of a VSI010 communications

interface module in the same measurement block.

Like all VibroSmart modules, the VSV301 module is

fully software configurable using the VibroSight

software. Using VibroSight Configurator, a module

can be configured to capture data continuously

at scheduled intervals or on the detection of an

alarm condition. In addition, spectral resolution,

frequency bandwidth, windowing function and

averaging are all fully configurable.

Using VibroSight Vision, an extensive catalogue of

plots is available for the visualisation and analysis

of measurement data.

Meggitt VibroSmart® VSV301 + VSB300 monitoring module

Security

The VSV301 + VSB300 support a module lock

feature that can be used to limit the functionality

of a VibroSmart® distributed monitoring system

(DMS), as required. Enabling module lock, for a

module, measurement block or system, helps to

reduce the possibility of interference in the

operation of the monitoring system itself and in

the machinery being monitored.

Accordingly, VibroSmart® security (module lock)

makes it easier for operators to comply with

international security / critical infrastructure

regulations. Refer to the VibroSmart® distributed

monitoring system (DMS) hardware manual for

further information.

Meggitt VibroSmart® VSV301 + VSB300 monitoring module Communications

Communications

All VibroSmart modules and devices

communicate using a system bus (SBUS), based

on Ethernet technology, that supports data

transfer rates of 100 Mbps at distances up to

100 m. The SBUS ensures the transfer of both nonreal-

time (standard) and real-time (time critical)

information between VibroSmart modules, and

supports communication with the host computer

running the VibroSight software.

VibroSmart modules can either be located sideby-

side (adjacent to each other) or separate

from one another. This flexibility allows the

functionality of the monitoring system to be

distributed depending on the size of and access

to the machinery being monitored. It also helps

reduce the expensive sensor cabling typically

required between sensors and monitoring

modules, by effectively replacing it with lower

cost Ethernet and power supply cabling.

VibroSmart modules that are located side-by-side

can communicate directly (no Ethernet cabling

required) using the sidebus connectors on the

terminal base that support both SBUS and

redundant power supply distribution. VibroSmart

modules that are mounted separate from one

another can communicate over standard and

redundant Ethernet networks of shielded twistedpair

Ethernet cable using the Ethernet connectors

on the terminal base. However, using these

Ethernet connectors does require that the power

supply is distributed separately.

Discrete signal interface (DSI) inputs, including the

module lock signal, and tachometer signals can

be connected directly to individual modules

(locally). Alternatively, to reduce external wiring,

these signals can be connected to a single

VibroSmart module and shared among modules

in the same measurement block using the SBUS.
