A Triconex system typically consists of the following typical modules:

Main Processor Module (Triple)

Communication Module

Input and output modules: can be analog and/or digital, and can operate independently or in hot standby (standby)

Power supply module (redundant)

Backplane (chassis) that can accommodate previous modules

System cabinets: one or more chassis can be compressed into a single cabinet

Grouping cabinets to accommodate and standardize interface connections between field instruments and Triconex system cabinets

Human Machine Interface (HMI) for monitoring events

Triconex TMR Digital Input Module

TMR Digital Input Modules

Each TMR Digital Input (DI) Module has three independent input channels that independently process all data entered into the module.

A microprocessor on each channel scans each input point, compiles the data, and transmits it to the main processor as required.

The input data is then voted on the main processor before being processed to ensure the highest integrity.

All critical signal paths are 100% triple processed to ensure safety and maximum availability.

Guaranteed safety and maximum availability. Each channel regulates signals independently and provides optical isolation between the field and the Tricon.

All TMR digital input modules provide complete and continuous diagnostics for each channel.

Any diagnostic failure on any channel activates the Module Failure Indicator, which in turn activates the chassis alarm signal.

The Module Failure Indicator points to a channel failure, not a module failure. Modules are guaranteed to operate normally in the event of a single failure and to continue to operate normally in the event of multiple failures of certain types.

Triconex 3504E High Density Digital Input Module

64-Point Digital Input Modules

Each 64-point digital input (DI) module has three isolated channels that independently process all data from the input module.

A microprocessor on each channel scans each input point, compiles the data, and transmits it to the main processor as required.

The input data is then voted on the main processor before being processed to ensure the highest integrity.

All digital input modules provide complete, continuous diagnostics for each channel.

A fault on any channel activates a fault indicator, which in turn activates a chassis alarm.

The TMR module is guaranteed to operate normally in the event of a single fault, and in some cases.

The TMR modules are guaranteed to operate in the event of a single fault, and in some cases, in the event of multiple faults.

All digital input modules support hot standby modules, which require a separate external termination panel (ETP) with cable connections to the Tricon backplane.

Each module is mechanically keyed to prevent improper installation in the chassis.

The Model 3504E High Density Digital Input Module provides continuous verification of Tricon’s ability to detect transitions to the opposite state.

On this TMR module, all critical signal paths are 100% tripled to ensure safety and maximum availability.

Each channel regulates the signal independently between the field and Tricon.

The Single Digital Input Module (Model 3564) is optimized for safety-critical applications where low cost is more important than maximum availability.

On a single module, only the portion of the signal path required to ensure safe operation is triplexed.

Triplexed. Special self-test circuits detect all “stuck-on” and “stuck-off” fault conditions within half a second.

If an individual module detects an input fault, it will report that point as OFF, which could cause a fault when switching to a hot standby module.
